Chicago’s music legacy is woven into the soul of the city—from the birthplace of Great Black Music to the stages that continue to amplify our creative expression. As BACA celebrates and uplifts Black arts and culture, the Music pillar honors the organizations, venues, and visionaries that shaped our sound and continue to inspire new generations. These spaces nurture talent, preserve cultural traditions, and keep Chicago’s musical heartbeat pulsing across neighborhoods and around the world.

AACM

The Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians was founded in 1965 by pioneers Muhal Richard Abrams, Jodie Christian, Steve McCall, and Phil Cohran. Dedicated to uplifting humanity through Great Black Music. Operates the AACM School of Music, offering free classes to the community.

Jazz Institute of Chicago

Long-standing organization dedicated to preserving and advancing jazz through performances, education, and community programs. Known for its Youth Ensemble programs that train the next generation of jazz musicians.

501(c)(3) nonprofit that preserves and promotes the music of Black composers. Provides a platform for artists of color and offers scholarships supporting emerging music students.

Iconic South Loop venue owned by Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Buddy Guy. Known for Chicago-style blues, Cajun-inspired food, and hosting live performances in a 600-capacity space.
